The Purpose

What interest could I possibly have in building a website around a blog? Why not just make a blog? Or even still, why even create a site at all which takes away from my real life. Well, here are the reasons why I created this site, maintained this site and will continue to do so until I figure out that it no longer suits my purposes.

I firmly believe I have a lot to offer my fellow humans. I write to offer my opinion and my mind to the world around me. I write about a number of topics but I write the most about religion, sexuality and gender. These are the things that are most pertinent to me right now in this stage of my life. I am certain that once they stop being pertinent to me, I will stop feeling a compulsion to write about them. Okay, maybe I won’t, but at least I know that I am contributing to the vast amount of LGBT people who refuse to be silent in their personal and professional lives. I am writing this blog as my opportunity to speak out and to remain out of the closet.

I write to educate and inform the general population, as well as the LGBT population. The only way we are going to fight homophobia and transphobia is by education. And sadly, until recently, only the richest people got to say what was in the history books. Today, however, we have an unique opportunity to put our words out into the world quite easily and to show that history is not just one sided. The Internet has allowed pundits to post their opinions of politics openly and in a medium which is free for all to access. Even when some sites close down, sites like the Internet Archive can be used to revive the content that was lost and to learn from these sites that were closed.

Sadly, many Americans are too cut off from the world (by their own choice, mind you) to actually want to be educated about anything. Post-secondary education rates are low, homelessness is high and our government is wiping out the middle class, thus making it harder and harder for people in the lower rungs of life to rise up if they can. Therefore, another purpose of this website is to shock. Many times, I love to shock people because it helps to desensitise people from their own fears and hatreds. I believe shocking people awakens people from their apathy and gives them a reason to question the prejudices that lie beneath the surface.

I also believe that it is important to be out in all aspects of the word. One day, I will acheive a balance in my life and I will no longer need to come out as a transsexual in my day-to-day life. However, if that happens, I don’t really want to woodwork completely. I want to continue to be out to show that transsexuality is not such a bad thing and that we really don’t need to hide who we are to lead good lives. I want to show that transsexuals can lead fairly normal lives and that we are among others in our normal day to day life. Chances are that you know a transsexual that has probably woodworked once they finished everything. There are a number of transsexuals that choose to woodwork the second they finish up everything involved with transition. I try not to condemn nor make these people feel guilt, that is their choice.

The Colophon

This website was created with WordPress and it was created on a Mac. It is hosted with MediaTemple.

The Frontend

The style is based on the K2 style, because of it’s flexibility. Initially, I desired to code it using the Sandbox theme, which is one of the few styles that was compatible with 2.5.x when the new version of WordPress was released. However, the K2 style was finally ported to WordPress 2.5.x, so I decided to use this design because it has all (or almost all) the AJAX functionality that I would need. While I am currently using a pre-built K2 design, I will ultimately create a K2-based design with my initial manifest of The Adventures of Jessica Sideways.

The Backend

This website uses the latest version of WordPress as a backend. I also use a number of different plugins and I am currently coding my own.
