“National Organization for Marriage” is a Deceptive Name

The “National Organization for Marriage” (also known as NOM), is a very deceptive name for the organization that operates under that umbrella (which is, in fact, a Giant Gay Repellent Umbrella). For the unaware, NOM is an organization that is fuelled by the religious right (we could abbreviate that to “morons”, but I will try to refrain from that) to actually discourage marriage between two people who genuinely love one another. I’m serious, an organization known as the National Organization for Marriage is in actuality, an organization that is fervently against marriage. They feel that because of the fact that some people believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old and it was made by a God that repeatedly has temper tantrums because no one will love him willingly (so he needs to make threats), they have the right to deceptively define marriage so people who meet their narrow guidelines can be married. As a devout atheist, I wouldn’t care what psychotic beliefs they have from their desert cult if they truly didn’t effect me. The fight for equality in civil marriage is a fight that involves me, no matter the gender of my potential spouse, because of the fact that my gender is (apparently) up for debate in many areas and the US Supreme Court doesn’t even want to go there. And of course, the spin doctors of traditional values have many things to say about transsexual marriage.

NOM is a very Orwellian organization, the closest thing I could think of being the Ministry of Love featured in his epic novel 1984 (or Miniluv in Newspeak, that NOM obviously advocates for). The morons of the religious right love to misuse language to confuse it’s constituents into being drones in their culture war. This article about transsexual marriage from the Traditional Values Coalition (a private organization that tries to keep people’s minds and society at large somewhere between Leviticus and the 18th century) shows the misuse of language not only when referring to the people involved but to invalidate and diminish the marriages of the living and dead. This is a very abhorrent practice and I have to say that reading through the websites of Conservative people and organizations makes my blood boil and bile rise. To see my fellow sisters and citizens derided like this not only makes me wish to attack and discredit the monsters who are doing this but also the monster behind them that provides the fuel for the fire and the drones themselves – Christianity. When they say “traditional values”, what they really mean is to impose Christian “values” where they are unneeded and unwanted.

NOM makes no secret of it’s opposition to marriage, as it is in support of actions which limit marriage to the standard Christian definition. They support the deceptively named Defense of Marriage Act, which in actuality, hurts marriage more than it supposedly “defends” it, denying access to marriage for many of our citizens. They support constitutional amendments which would deny marriage equality to people in certain states. They do absolutely nothing to protect marriage, but everything in their power to limit access to it and thus, promote sex outside of marriage and families not bound by marriage. It is every citizen’s obligation to protect our country and it’s laws from these right-wing bigots before they do even more serious and irreparable damage to our country. Fortunately, we have a legislative and executive majority in our federal government which shall help to keep the conservatives from getting many of their discriminatory bills through but we need to remain vigilant.

Update: They don’t even make a secret of their aptitude to use Orwellian language, as seen on their website.

It is very interesting to note that even though NOM makes no secret of it’s work to discriminate against LGBT citizens, they still are seen as “protecting marriage” by the right wing conservatives. They have sold their supporters a false bill of goods, lied to them on a constant basis and still are seen as doing good work and having money poured into them by numerous organizations. They have worked to commit atrocities in our society because of the religion they are based on in order to limit marriage to straight couples and no one in their organization seems to realize this. They don’t even see it as discrimination and they appear to have no empathy towards the people that they harm with their actions. An organization such as this is truly abhorrent and must be stopped for the good of humanity.

And that’s not all, because NOM has officially teamed up with the homophobic Miss California Carrie Prejean, who has been a new pet celebrity of the conservatives since Perez Hilton popped that question. They are coming up with a new ad campaign to further their anti-marriage agenda called “No Apology”, but it does make you think. Well, unless you are a conservative, that is and you really don’t do much of that anyway… NOM is currently attacking every state which has marriage equality bills in the legislature, making their way up to our elected representatives and convincing them to fight against equality. They will lie and cheat and threaten to get what they want, which is a nation that follows the format of the Christian religion. But I have to continue to say that one of the best things about our nation is that we are actually starting to have a government that makes sense, along with laws that are there for a reason. Maybe one of these days, we can actually live and work and play in a society where Christianity is no longer seen as relevant and we can be a peaceful nation. This is my dream and I hope that my children’s children can one day realize it fully.

I would like to take a moment to reflect on the quote from NOM, “But Carrie’s courage inspired a whole nation and a whole generation of young people because she chose to risk the Miss USA crown rather than be silent about her deepest moral values.” What the fuck? The values of this Miss USA reject are hardly courageous since they tow the line of the religious right instead of standing in opposition to their bigotry and hate. She is not courageous in the least bit, she is a cowardly bitch who advocates for discrimination against her fellow citizens. She is not a leader, she is not a victim and her values are just plain ugly, because of the fact that they hurt real people. If she were to espouse anti-Semitic viewpoints instead of homophobic viewpoints, would it have been courageous then? Hardly, but we can only hope that with Carrie here, the last and final strands of homophobia will die out and we can finally have a nation that has granted marriage equality to all of it’s citizens, regardless of what some Bronze Age myth has said. She is only courageous in a very Orwellian definition of the word, which would assume that courage means to tow the line of popular thought and to discriminate against real people.
