The Adventures of Jessica Sideways

I would like to tell you about an awesome webcomic that I found only a few short months ago. At Freethunk.net, where there is already a host of irreligious webcomics and other fun stuff to play around with, as well as factual news about the laughable marketing to these gullible sheep. But I also found another fun little treat over at Freethunk, a webcomic called ‘The Littlest Atheist‘. Not to create any spoilers or anything, but the basis of the story is that the Littlest Atheist, Bertrand, is now being forced to go to church by his mother who recently suffered the death of both her husband and Bertrand’s father. While Bertrand has been able to keep his wits about him, continue to keep his sense of humour in check and keep is ability to decipher the Christian bullshit for what it really is, his mother has fallen into the church. In the second strip, she admits that her husband was not really interested in raising him as a Christian and instead, raised him as an atheist. Fortunately, he did this so well that he was able to resist the Borg-like mentality of the Christians he goes to church with, so far.

What has been covered is that Bertrand is now going to church, he was conscripted into a Christmas play (initially as Herod but was then demoted to a sheep by the children’s pastor, Fred). He made well to humiliate his mother by summing up the bullshit of the story of the virgin birth (I can’t forget this quote: “Oh, my god! The holy spirit knocked up Mary!?!”) After this, he encountered what he thought was a talking snowman and now, the story has come to the children’s pastor dating Bertrand’s mother and the current comic shows Bertrand and Fred’s daughter meeting up. Fred’s daughter is a now an unbeliever but from what I can see, she is not an unbeliever because it makes absolutely no sense. It appears that she is an unbeliever because of the fact that her parents separated because her mother started to leave the faith and Fred would not have any of it. Sadly, this story repeats itself over and over again in real life, but many children are not as lucky to build up such an atheism when the parents split and one leaves the faith.

In fact, the bullshit stories that are inculcated into these children have them reject their non-Christian parents and act in a very condescending manner, telling these parents that they will pray for them and that they hope that they will come back to Jesus/God because of the fact that their lack of faith is the real reason why the marriage broke up and not because their spouse was a selfish little prick that could not live with someone who had a different faith than them. Yeah, that was absolutely right - NOT!
