Yoga is Fun!

General

If there is one thing that people find odd about me, it is the fact that I really love yoga. The problem is though that with everyone that I interact with on a daily basis, no one understands yoga and I do not have the time nor the money to improve my practice at all. But I can tell you that there are many, many benefits to learning yoga and yes, those benefits can include weight loss depending on your style of yoga. One other benefit is that if you tell a fundamentalist Christian that you are performing yoga, they will act as though you are actually practicing the Hindu religion, which of course, shows how little they know about the world around them. Also, yoga can be done anywhere you are and you can possibly do it in as little or much time as you have.

I believe firmly that yoga can help you lose weight and personally, losing weight is one of my major life goals. I have had this damned pot belly ever since I was about 10 years old and I will tell you that while I do not have stretch marks that show rapid weight gain, this thing has grown with me as I have grown up. However, this is a serious problem because of the fact that I do not like how unfeminine this makes me look. So, I am dedicated to taking up a practice of yoga that will allow me to undergo an intense workout and still maintain some sort of peace of mind. I am also concerned because I am 22 yet I ache all over and I feel like total bloody crap sometimes. I think this is because over my childhood and throughout the years, I have not taken proper care of my body and it is starting to break down. With a yoga practice tailored to help me gain mental peace and physical fitness though, I feel that a number of problems in my life will be resolved.

Remember how I said that doing yoga can piss off fundamentalist Christians? Well, this is absolutely true because they actually believe that performing yoga is a way of worshiping gods from other cultures. Of course, common sense says otherwise but then again, if these people believed in common sense, they would not be Christians, now would they? They buy into the idiotic idea that the goal of yoga is unity with a Hindu concept of god and to be honest, it is not that at all. If it were so, why would many self-professed rationalists such as myself be so willing to take on yoga? I think that the real concern with Christianity and yoga is that yoga gets results – it brings real relaxation and without any of the superstitious mumbo jumbo. If someone does yoga long enough and well enough, they can develop their own practice where they can have inner contentment and peace without the need for an invisible, all-powerful (yet apathetic or sadistic) God. I think that this scares many Christian ministers because it directly threatens their upline. So therefore, in an interest to piss off the religious reich, I highly recommend yoga to anyone and everyone.

Another cool thing about yoga is that you do not need a license to practice it, you can go as far into it as you so desire. There are morning routines, books, DVDs, CDs, courses, lines of yoga clothing and much more but you do not need all of this crapola. There are styles of yoga for the office and even when you are on an aeroplane! It does take a little bit of effort and planning but it is quite possible to add yoga into your day to day life. If nothing else, you can perform “walking meditation” which is a type of meditation you can perform anywhere.

I have been doing Pilates for about 5 years and started doing Yoga about a year ago. I love it. It helps develop a more slender body and increases the mobility of your bodies joints. Too many of us just dont do enough to stay in shape. Dresses always fit better and I just look so much better when I look in the mirror. I sleep better also after a class. There are just to many things I like about Yoga to never stop. Dont let the men tell you its only for women as flexability and fighting the onset of the aging process is a universal goal. I never think of Yoga as a religious thing but a venue in making me feel better about myself, both physically and mentally.
