When Will Those Fundies Get It?

General

When you think that the person running the “truth truck” might be feeling a little bit more shame for their actions and see how they look in the public eye, your eye catches a news article. An article that exclaims, once again, that the Christian morons are at it again! This time, their enemy hobby horse is on Abortion and it’s an addition that they hope to place during the DNC maelstrom. This city will be at maximum capacity with those of us who aren’t going to the convention trying to find ways to conduct our business without going into the downtown corridor. And these people are looking to irritate, misinform and confuse as many people as humanly possible. This would be a big audience for them, left leaning people by the thousands who care about human rights more than a church would be seeing their message of hate and poison. You have all sorts of people who are trying to stir up trouble during the Convention and I sincerely hope that Denver Police can help keep these people in check.

But let’s look at the deeper issue here and what is at stake. Abortion is a fundamental right that is being battled on by women’s health and women’s right advocates, as well as the evil Religious Reich. Abortion and family planning technology has helped millions of women nationwide alone and has been helping women everywhere in our country ever since the landmark victory of Roe vs. Wade. Abortion, as well as Emergency Contraception, helps women who are not ready to have children for whatever reason stop the process and hopefully get their lives together before they even start thinking of starting a family, or not. The idea of family planning is to help couples become better prepared and know about the options for birth control while the couple is getting ready. Personally, if I could get pregnant, I would. I want to have a family someday and would have a child along with my partner having a vial of sperm from a donor every so often. But I am not so stupid as to do it before I have a college degree and I could take care of my kid. I would need to prepare myself and let’s face it, this will probably mean waiting to have my kid until I am 30. Whatever it takes, though. But the religious right would keep me and my partner from accessing this technology.

Advances in family planning technology have always been an issue for the church. It’s no different if it’s forbidding the use of condoms in AIDS-ridden parts of Africa, the spread of rumours that a smallpox vaccine was a part of a conspiracy to sterilize citizens and prevent the spread of Islam, it all falls on one thing, helping people come through the doors of the church and emptying their tithe into the coffers. That is what religion wants, fear from it’s citizens, the promise of heaven everlasting (as well as the promise of virgins in some religions) and the offering plate being passed around. These fundies are inadvertently helping to increase the already obese coffers of people that are high up in their religion. More believers, more money and more fear always helps religion dupe more people into it’s moronic bullshit.

Finally, a message to all the people who still are anti-abortion, anti-equal rights, anti-women’s health: Don’t want an abortion? Don’t get one! Simple as that! But don’t infringe on the civil rights and liberties of others! Do not try to drive the abortion industry into the underground where it will actually be very seedy and the appropriate amount of care cannot possibly be given. America has criminalized prostitution, euthenasia and drugs, but these things still run rampant in this country. And they are more dangerous because they have to be underground to survive. If we made the production of drugs legal, we would be able to tax drug dealers and subject them to a FDA process which could help improve the quality and safety of drugs being produced. If we made prostitution legal, we would not have horror stories of pimps beating up prostitutes, they could actually be seen as people in industry, important to our country and fairly taxed like every other citizen. If we made euthenasia legal, people who are seriously suffering from terminal illnesses of which makes them a vegetable and unlikely to recover will not have to worry about having to suffer for years and years, they can die with dignity. Yet, religion keeps these wholly beneficial things illegal and thus takes them to the underground. So Christians, read these words, take them to heart: mind your own business.

Look at the graphic on your blog. Do the moral values of life differ at each stage shown? How can you abort a life at one of these stages?

Well, that’s just a fine sentiment there Bill, I’ll keep that in mind the next time a fundie president decides to again bear the mantle of moral Christian arrogance and send young men and women off to war to kill and be killed for the convenience of politics. You may view abortion as morally reprehensible but then it is not really for you to decide is it Bill? You can never be in a position to empathize and therefore your objection is a moot point. If God is to judge these women on their actions, then let God judge while keeping yourself occupied in hopefully otherwise charitable acts.

Bill, you also must understand that the path of least suffering involves hurting the least people. This person who is having the child has friends, family and loved ones. Maybe a husband, but maybe not. If her life is in danger and the choice must be made to either keep the baby or save the life of someone who is already connected to everyone around us, we must decide on the path that will create the least suffering. Abortion should never be entered into lightly but there are circumstances which would make it absolutely necessary.
