Father Joe: So you believe in these kind of things?
Fox Mulder: Let’s just say that I want to believe.
- From X-files: I want to believe
There are a number of Christians that would accuse me of being close-minded towards their god. That I have somehow “lost god” in my life and I need to have him back. But ironically enough, since I have lost the idea of the Christian god in my life, I have been getting better and better.
But still, I want to believe. I just want to see proof of what I am believing in. I recently discovered the idea of transcendentalism and I have made the preliminary observation that I may very well be a transcendentalist. However, the idea of transcendentalism does not require belief in ultimately preposterous statements and spiritual pipe dreams.
I want to see irrefutable proof that a creator god exists, before I will start believing in it. Now, obviously, I would need to set specifics about what I want. The person who created God’s Reward has set some pretty good requirements, so I think I should use those. I want proof that there is a God that:
- created the world
- created life
- is sentient and intelligent
- communicates with mankind
- authored rules for mankind to live by
- communicated consequences if mankind does not live by those rules
Man-made products of any sort will not be considered. Man-made products prove man can make the products. Man-made products prove the existence of God only if God is a man-made product. God as a work of man-made fiction is well known in books, movies, etc., but fiction will not be considered. Man-made products include (but are not limited to):
- words, whether spoken, written, sung, or electronically generated
- art, whether painted, sculpted, or crafted by any manmade process
- fabric or other materials manufactured by manmade processes
- architecture
- scientific devices
- humans themselves
- human actions
- etc.
I want to believe, so Christians - please show me proof of your god.
