Is this Really What You Want to Show the World About Your Faith?

I am told repeatedly by Christians that I should be a bit more respectful towards their faith, and sometimes, I start to feel as though they are right. Well, not about respecting their faith mind you, because a homophobic, misogynistic book such as the bible which has inspired the murders of countless people and the burning of fellow “heretics” deserves no respect in my opinion, but rather, the right to their faith. Then they start doing really stupid shit to make me feel less sympathy for them. Today, when checking my new twitter followers, I stumbled on the site on one of my newest followers which is also Christian (that seems to be an odd trend recently). I came across an article about a chocolate statue of the “Virgin” Mary, a key figure in the Christian mythology and last seen on grilled cheese sandwiches. But I don’t presume that this statue came about by natural phenomenon but rather, the work of people who intended to make a statue out of chocolate that resembles the “virgin” mary. And my question is why is it that this is the kind of thing that people who supposedly take their faith seriously would want to show to the world? What’s next, a candy Jesus?

It’s not like I don’t expect these things, in fact, during the Easter holiday, a holy day in Christian mythology, I saw a chocolate cross. My thought was “humm, maybe I could buy this, borrow a video camera and show myself biting the cross, and mocking their religion. I eventually decided against it for the reasons that I like most of the people in the place I live and I don’t want the building to be firebombed. Also, I don’t know anyone with a digital video camera that I could use to upload the video directly to YouTube and maybe Flickr. But seriously, what’s next, communion snack packs for the indigent, prisoners (which I assume can be brought grape juice and bread or have it supplied by the prison) when you are on the go? Scripture candy which could show the “sweet” verses in the bible but help people to ignore all the genocide that their god rains down on his victims. Christians, I would advise you to start taking your religion a bit more seriously if you expect me to give it any sort of respect at all. Namely, this means to stop being sheep for the priesthood to exact their own bigotry and hate in our world and to stop being so kitsch about evangelizing. In fact, just pass up my house all together, I’m not interested in your phony baloney god.
