Today, I received an e-mail from Lambda Legal announcing loudly and proudly that we have finally gained equal marriage rights in Connecticut! With this victory, we now have 3 states in the United States have fully equal marriage. The high court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to deny equal marriage rights to lesbian and gay couples, and I have to resound with the obvious claim: damn right! (Yeah, I know this was a short post, but I will say more tomorrow)

Yes, in California, there has been a very large range of support for equal marriage and the most surprising of which came from a public utility company. Such support from such an unexpected source is always welcome and I should hope that this inspires other government agencies to take the right stand in the way for equal rights and equal marriage. The public utility in question is Pacific Gas and Electric and their support for equal marriage was announced by Darlene Chiu, their spokeswoman. And as it turns out, this kind of position is not at all odd for this public utility to make, as they have been fighting for equal rights and were one of the first companies to sponsor a LGBT association in the 80s. They have also fought actions to curtail affirmative action and crack down on illegal immigration. Now, is this a company that cares about it’s citizens or what? When I say the phrase “chosen family”, it means the family that I surround myself with and the people in my biological family that I like. People like my little sister, Aunt Lori and Uncle Jim fit this category by default. I don’t exactly know whether or not my grandmother would as she hasn’t really talked with me since I’ve started using my new name and told her that I am working on a serious path that will lead to a sex change. My grandmother, from all accounts, is a very religious woman (she lives in Texas so I am certain you can guess which religion) and she works as a receptionist at a church in Clear Lake. Of course, since I have not talked to her on the subject, it could go either way. Hell, my Uncle Jim is a Episcopalian minister and has accepted me as I am and is working on trying to regender me in his mind, even though I act badly and chastise him when he makes mistakes, which is wrong (although, he lived in Sacramento for years so that could also affect his ideology). What is my biggest issue when it comes to LGBT advocacy? That is a very good question to ask, because there are a lot of issues that warrant equal attention. There are inequalities in adoption, a lot of internalized homophobia in a lot of people and there is no desire in the public school system to start teaching tolerance for LGBT people. A lot of people think that my priorities may have changed when I was gay bashed at Safeway the other day. But alas, they have not. While the incident at Safeway does pose a question of whether or not a city is truly LGBT-friendly, it has not changed my core passion. The issue that I fight for the most, and the one closest to my heart, is equal marriage rights. Continue reading ‘My biggest issue in the LGBT community’
