Haven’t gone to church in weeks, what the hell?

I haven’t been to my UU church, First Unitarian Society of Denver in weeks. Furthermore, I have not even made an effort to try to go to any of the other UU churches in the Denver metro area (First Universalist, Jefferson Unitarian Church, Open Circle, UU Boulder, et cetra). However, I still identify as a Unitarian Universalist, with all of it’s religious liberalism and freedom to be who I am. I still tell people that even though I am an atheist, I do go to a Unitarian Universalist church and explain why it is that I even go to a house of worship at all, if there is nothing for me to worship. And I make sure to witness and advocate for our uncommon denomination by telling people the good news about our faith (uuvangelism), so why is it that I haven’t gone to church in weeks? My Response to the Attacks at the Tennessee Valley UU Church

Today, I had written posts about the beauty of the gay community and how a young woman was robbed of her constitutional right to freedom from religion by a prejudiced Kentucky civil servant. Now, I am writing about a topic which is even closer to the heart, a very bloody realization of the effects of religious intolerance in this country. Today, I received an e-mail from the Church of the Younger Fellowship about how there was a gunman who attacked people who were worshiping at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church located in Knoxville, Tennessee. A person, for whatever motivations, who made the conscious decision to take the life of people who were just worshiping at this particular church. This has been blogged about all throughout the UU blogosphere. The attacker was the ex-husband of a parishioner at the church and attacked the members of the church of their religious freedom and diversity. Despite the miles between Knoxville and Denver, just hearing about this attack shocked me to the very core just reading about it. Why I Want to Go to Naropa for my BA & MA

I have finally decided to major in psychology. And I have already picked out the school that I just wish to go to for both my bachelors and masters degrees - Naropa University. Naropa is a private (read: expensive as hell) university which provides Buddhist-based education up in the liberal foothills of Boulder, Colorado. Truth be told, the entire reason why I moved to Colorado in the first place was so that I could easily attend Naropa. And guess how I suddenly became broke? Yes, it was by trying to move to and live in Boulder without having a job already lined up before the move. But either way, there are several reasons why I want to have a Buddhist-based education in psychology at Naropa. Continue reading ‘Why I Want to Go to Naropa for my BA & MA’

Pridefest, yay!

Well, I am volunteering at Denver Pridefest on both the 21st and the 22nd of this month. I am also going to be marching in the pride parade with my fellow UUs from the Mountain Desert District. So yeah, next weekend is pretty full for me, as I will probably be operating some sort of booth and policing the area to ensure that no one is selling anything at the Pridefest without having paid the GLBT Centre first. Tomorrow is my volunteer orientation so that is what I am doing after I get through with Pathways to Membership at First Unitarian Denver tomorrow. Continue reading ‘Pridefest, yay!’

Praise be to Unitar!

So, just what the hell have I been smoking and who the fuck is Unitar, you might be asking? You are going to be amazed, but first I must ask you are you ready to hear about this amazing truth? Are you sure? Well, my friend - Unitar is the god that the Unitarian Universalists worship. Don’t believe me? Then take a look at the UUA’s website? Still don’t believe me? Do a Google search for Unitar. I am certain that there are millions of sites that talk about the love and good will of Unitar. Continue reading ‘Praise be to Unitar!’

I signed the book!

Today started off in a very interesting manner. For a few Sundays now, I have been going to this church called “Faith Ministries” a/k/a “Faith Bible Chapel West” here in Denver. I have agreed to go in a hopeful effort to try to shut some of the theists that regularly annoy the shit out of me up. Anyways, the church offers a breakfast to anyone who attends so while I was eating my breakfast, the minister told me that I am a “unapologetic atheist” (of course, on this point, he is right - which is a rarity for him) and I will never ever be saved. With that, he also told me to leave the church and never come back. Since this guy was a hypocrite and a liar, I would be more than happy to leave rather than hear this asshole preach. So, I took my breakfast and headed towards the bus stop on Colfax, heading towards First Unitarian. Continue reading ‘I signed the book!’

Becoming a UU minister

I am considering becoming a minister with the Unitarian Universalist church. And I plan to go to Naropa University to get the degree that would allow me to become a minister at a UU church (a Master’s of Divinity is required). Now, I am a relatively sane person and I espouse no belief in a god. Why would I want to join the Unitarian Universalist church, much less become a minister in the UU church? Well, I have a number of personal reasons but the main reason that attracted me is that they do not espouse any homophobia or transphobia. In fact a number of Unitarian Universalists are understanding, awesome people that I love to congregate with. Every UU congregation I have attended has had some of the warmest, funniest people that I have ever met. Continue reading ‘Becoming a UU minister’
