I was reading the book, the Cult of Mac and I came across the chapter that talked about Apple’s Chief Evangelist and about the mailing list known as the Evangelist. The purpose of this list was to publicize articles which talked negatively about Apple’s products and to help get people who were dedicated to the gospel of Mac to get an author to rethink her/his statement. Well, I just thought “well, why would anyone bash Apple, they have some pretty good products”? Well, apparently, I have a couple of opinions about some Apple products where I think that Apple could have seriously done better. The first is about Apple’s web service MobileMe and when I posted about it, it happened to become instantly popular - having received about 500 hits since the day it was posted. This last weekend, my hits went from about 30-100 to numbers like 353 and 459 hits, pushing that post to be even more popular than the front page of my website. That post has the most comments of any posts, with most of them (very respectfully, I might add) disagreeing with me. And I have to wonder, is this the pull that Apple has over the world? Just when you think people couldn’t get any lower, you hear about stories like this. A man decided to name his daughter “Sarah McCain Palin” against his wife’s objections, just to support a misogynistic ticket. And the father was quoted as saying “I took one for the cause”. ‘Scuse me but taking advantage of your wife’s state when she is knocked out from the pain and horrible experience to stick a name onto your daughter so that you could advance this ticket is not “taking one for the cause”. You violated the trust of your wife and you have permanently scarred your daughter for the rest of her life, as she would have proof that you regarded her life with absolutely no respect or dignity at all. You showed your contempt for your wife’s right to work with you to pick out a name that is appropriate for your daughter. You sir, are a fine example of a Republican - refusing to recognize the sacrifice that women have to make during pregnancy and using it to further your own agenda. You are a consummate opportunist and a thief of your child’s innocence. You are a true example of what a Republican is but that also shows your selfish ideology and your desire to hurt those who cannot defend themselves to advance the success of the rich. I am a fairly faithful Apple fan and I think that for the most part, Apple’s products are far superior to that of any other companies’. The MacBooks and the MacBook Pros have been given a major overhaul and look and work better than they ever have (yeah, I love the aluminum/glass look that Apple gave to the iMac in it’s most recent update. The iPhone is getting better, albeit it still requires you to have AT&T service so I would have to wait Apple out or wait until I move to Canada. But there is still one service that Apple sells that is not worth the money and I would highly advise against. It is a service that was once called .mac, but now is called MobileMe. For the uninitiated, MobileMe is an online service from Apple that offers synchronization between Macs (very useful if you have multiple macs), PCs and your iPhone. However, it’s web offerings leave much to be desired and the synchronization benefits are hardly worth the price. Continue reading ‘Apple’s Shame: MobileMe’
